During the late 1800s, Udupi had developed into a Taluka and most of the government buildings were being constructed specifically around the present Taluk Panchayat Office, the area was then considered as an administrative hub. It was sometime in the 1889-90s when the construction of a new school was proposed in the area by the Udupi Taluka Board, and it is believed that this led the old Jail to be shifted from its original location at the Board High School (near present service bus stand), to its current location. The construction of this new Jail was completed in 1906 as per the engraving found on the building.
The heritage value of the building is enhanced as we know from different accounts that this Jail was once active in housing many second/third-level freedom fighters during the time of India’s Independence.
The present Udupi sub-Jail is spread across an area of 3019.37 sqm/32,500 sqft and consists of 24 cells, 2 holding cells, a few lockups, and a police station. This sub-Jail was dedicated to criminals committing crimes like thievery, shoplifting, vandalism, murder, etc.
A special thank you to Shri Rayappa, Municipal Commissioner, Udupi City Municipality Corporation.
